Ceiling Fan Installation

Ceiling fans are a must here in the summer time. A ceiling fan can make any indoor and outdoor space more comfortable.  Check out the below article for some tips on choosing the right ceiling fans for your space and what to expect when getting them installed.

Why Should I Get A Ceiling Fan?

The primary purpose of a ceiling fan is to circulate the air and make the space a bit more comfortable.  You may be able to save money by bumping your thermostat up a degree or two and not notice the difference once your ceiling fan is installed.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans

There isn’t anything much better than sitting on your back porch and enjoying the warm weather while sitting comfortably under a ceiling fan.  Seriously, if your covered outdoor space doesn’t have a fan, you are missing out.   When choosing an outdoor fan, make sure it’s rated for outdoor use and in our coastal region, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s weatherproof.

Getting It Installed - What to Expect

Angie’s List reports that the average cost for a ceiling fan installation in 2013 was around $200.  Depending on your current electrical wiring situation, however, the cost can fluctuate.  If you want a fan installed where there is already wiring, the cost will usually stay on the lower end of the range.   If there is no wiring in that part of the house or building, it’s likely to take the electricians a little more time on the job so expect to pay a little more.

Indoor Ceiling Fans

Different room sizes require different fan sizes.   How much fan is too much fan?  Energy Star gives a basic guide to choosing the right fan size.

  • Up to 75 square feet = 29-36 inch
  • 76-144 square feet = 36-42 inch
  • 144-225 square feet = 44 inch
  • 225-400 square feet = 50-54 inch

Ceiling height also needs to be factored in.  Depending on your ceiling height, you may want a flush mounted ceiling fan or a downrod mount ceiling fan.  Usually, fans will come with a downrod mount but if your ceiling is extra tall the downrod mount that came with the ceiling fan may not be a good fit for your building.
