2-Prong Outlets? Time to Update

Out with the old 2-prong outlets2 prong outlet

You may remember the 2-prong outlets that were common prior to the 70’s.   If your house still has them, it’s probably time to make use of the phrase, “Out with old and in with the new”.

Why do I need to update my outlets?

If your home has the 2-prong outlets, your house isn’t necessarily out of code, these outlets are grandfathered in.  In many cases, the wiring to the outlets can be old and brittle with insulation falling off the wire.  When there isn’t proper insulation on the wire, you run the risk of having a short.

What do you do when you have an electrical plug that has 3 prongs when you have a 2-prong outlet? We’re familiar with the adapters some people choose to use instead of having the outlet replaced, It may be a quick and cheap fix but there is no ground and you run the risk of electrical shock.

Outdated 2-prong outletsCan’t I just do it myself?

There are websites out there that show you step by step instructions on replacing 2-prong outlets to 3-prong outlets, HOWEVER, you can never be sure the results will be up to code.  In our review of online instructionals on the topic, we found multiple problems like outlets not being grounded and final results not being up to code.

Be safe and not sorry when dealing with electrical upgrades. Avoid short circuits and electrical shock and get the job done up to code by professionals.

Charging Your Devices Just Got Easier

Charging Electronics

At my home we have a drawer dedicated to just charging cables and chargers.  Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to use your wall outlets for things other than charging devices?  I thought so too.  Even though I have four outlets along one wall, I still find myself looking for another outlet to charge my phone or tablet or laptop.  Not to mention my husband’s phone or my son’s walkie talkies and RC helicopter.

Wall Plates with Built In Chargers

Thankfully, there are some very smart people who had the same problems and came up with a new wall plate with chargers built-in.  Now you can plug your USB charging cable directly into the wall outlet and still use the power outlet for other things like a lamp or radio.  For your convenience, I’ve included couple of products (below)on Amazon so you can find a couple different options.  For the tech guru, this is a must-have and even if you aren’t the tech guru it’s nice to have a dedicated charging station in your home. If you would like a couple of these wall outlets for your home, please give us a call and we can get them installed for you.

What our customers say…

“It started with great CS skills on the phone, great follow through and follow-up. The work quality was exceptional and the 2 techs (Seth and dang it…forgot his name, sorry) could have not been more helpful and accommodating. I will use NO one else down here in SE Georgia. Outstanding company!! Thank you guys and gals!!”

Sparking Outlets – Possible Fire Hazard

Electrical Safety Hazards – Sparking Outlets

When you’ve got sparking outlets, it may be time to call a pro.  Listed below are some reasons why outlets could spark.

Everyday / Normal Sparking

You plug in a small appliance or lamp and there is a tiny spark.  When power is transferred to that appliance, there will be a quick draw on the available power.  This results in that tiny spark you saw and is sometimes normal.  However, if you continue to see sparking in a single outlet, it may need to be looked at by an electrician.

Poor Installation or Repair

Many times this is due to a DIY attempt or a lazy installer. When a receptacle is installed, wires should be connected to the screw terminal.  The installer may have simply stabbed the wire in the back rather than connecting it to the screw terminal. This is not necessarily wrong but it is better practice to connect via the screw terminal rather than stab lock on the back. If you aren’t sure how to install an outlet, please call a pro that is licensed and insured.

Old or Loose ConnectionsOriginal outlets in a 1982 home. Outlet is old and connections are loose. This could lead to sparking outlets.

Outlets wear out just like anything else that gets used everyday.  You’ll know your outlets are old when the plug doesn’t stay in or just barely stays in the outlet. Loose connections can result in short circuits and electrical fires.

Water Damage

Water damage in an outlet causes oxidation which will result in poor connection between the outlet and the plug. Poor connections cause heat and will eventually burn up your receptacle.

Exposed and Frayed Wires

Electrical wires are covered with and insulating material which prevents electricity from conducting through it.  If your electrical wires are exposed and not covered by some time of insulating material, a serious spark can occur.

What do I do when my outlets are sparking?

If the spark is something you are concerned about and believe it could be one of the last 4 reasons listed, go ahead and turn the breaker off to that outlet and call a professional.
