Savannah electrician shares favorite memories from 50 years of service

1991 Talmadge Bridge Work

With 50 Years of service as Savannah’s electrician, I wanted to hear about the favorite jobs and memories from over the years from the family that started Joyner Electric and Security. I spoke with Charlotte Joyner, Melvin Joyner, and Kyndall Joyner about some of their favorite jobs over the years.

Charlotte: Mine was collecting the checks! (lol) I think Claxton Poultry was Frank’s favorite.  He was up there every week.  They’d all go out to lunch together.   This was in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

In 1991, we got a job wiring up cell towers where we went up to North Carolina.  We took our camper and camped in a cow pasture.  We took Jamie with us to do that job.

In 1996, Frank was really fired up and excited about the Olympics job.  We were subcontractors under Bill Johnson, a friend from church, for the electrical.  The Olympics was the highlight – Frank was out there every day.

We used to work for SEMCO and Southern Bulk every Friday and that would make payroll. They shipped in clay to make china – that’s where Grandaddy (Frank) got all the 2×8 boards to build our house. That’s why our house walls are so thick. – Charlotte  Joyner

MelvinProbably the Olympics because we got to work offshore on the barge island on the sound.  We had to wire up 2 big generators for the sailing regatta. We had a crew of about 6 men.

My 2nd favorite was the Talmadge Bridge because we had to work up high, you know, something different.  We did the electrical maintenance and infrastructure for the building of the Talmadge Bridge.  – Melvin Joyner

Kyndall: It was probably the year we got the contract for Savannah Squares.  We were coming out of the recession in 2007.  Melvin had built a relationship with Savannah Squares.  Nobody would lend us money in Savannah – we had to pay for the fixtures in advance.  That job gave us the fuel to turn things around.

Marriott was a fun one.  Around 2017-18, we did the electrical for a Marriott remodel in Savannah and then in 2019 we did the remodel in Jacksonville. It was a fun season.  – Kyndall Joyner

The last few years have been exciting years for Joyner Electric and Security.  In 2021 they were named Best of Georgia by the Georgia Business Journal and then were named Best Electrician in 2022 by the Savannah Morning News.

50 Years of service done – here’s to 50 more years! Thanks for supporting our small business!
